Haiti is one of the poorest countries on Earth while Dominican Republic has one of the highest GDPs per capita of Latin America – what’s the refugee situation over there?QuestionThey share an island, they’ve had a bitter history of mutual political intervention (Haiti at one point controlled what would become the Dominican Republic), and Haiti is sadly a country that has been contending with a terrible humanitarian crisis for generations now – and it keeps getting worse.Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic has essentially gotten to a stage where its economic and human development indicators have roughly exceeded those of Brazil – a country which, incidentally, hosts a huge Haitian refugee diaspora. What’s exactly going on for the Dominican Republic not to be dealing with a refugee crisis from across the border? How difficult is it for Haitians to cross the border? What’s stopping them?
Compared to Haiti, and even when the frame of reference is the US, Mexico is an extremely developed country where the drive for an exodus of the population wouldn’t be as significant as Haiti’s (the US GDP PPP per capita is 3x higher than Mexico’s, not 9x higher as DR’s) – and, in fact, the data shows: the number of Mexicans crossing the US border compared to Central American nationals is proportionally low. Not to mention that in the grand scheme of things, current security challenges aside, Mexico is the kind of place people historically move to instead of move from. The average person’s life in Mexico amounts to a life of luxury for someone from Haiti.
Conversely, the US has way more means to enforce border controls than the Dominican Republic – not to mention that they can at least rely on cooperation with Mexican authorities (and they do, substantially). The Dominican Republic, on the other hand, doesn’t get to have anyone to talk to across the border.
I would have genuinely expected way more Haitians in the DR at this stage.
